Last week I wanted to try and make one of my favorite Chinese food menu items, Beef and Broccoli.
3 lbs sirloin steak or boneless beef chuck roast, sliced thin
1 1/2 cups beef broth
2/3 cup low-sodium soy sauce
1/3 cup brown sugar
1 1/2 Tbsp. sesame oil
Crushed red pepper
6 garlic cloves, minced
6 Tbsp. cornstarch
4 Tbsp. water
2 heads of broccoli, cut into florets
White rice, cooked
In the crockpot, whisk together beef broth, soy sauce, brown sugar, sesame oil, crushed red peppers, and garlic.
Place slices of beef in the liquid and took to coat. Cover with lid and cook on low hear for 4 hours.
After 4 hours, whisk together cornstarch and water in small bowl (you may want to use more corn starch, this didn’t make the sauce thick like Beef and Broccoli is at a restaurant). Pour into crock pot and stir to mix well. Start your rice cooking at this time. Add the broccoli and gently stir to combine. Cover with lid and cook 30 minutes to cook broccoli and thicken sauce.
The kids really loved this meal. It was the first time they had eaten steak and said that it was so easy to chew. My youngest daughter doesn’t like to eat meat because it is usually difficult to chew, but cooking the steak in a crockpot made it very tender
Sever with warm white rice. Enjoy!
